1 Babies are all born long-sighted. As we grow, the eyeball changes shape and, like an auto-focus on a camera, tries to find the optimal point of refraction. Any camera-owner knows what it is like when the lens can’t find its focus – the picture taken, which represents the camera’s best guess, comes out blurry and indistinct. The developing human eye in a child is a little like this. Without the right kind of powerful light, the eye cannot learn where its ideal focus is, and ends up by making a similar “best guess” which has little chance of being perfect.
